Sex Offenders Living so Close to our schools

I find it appalling that the ELMIRA BOE has a policy that requires my child to walk 2 miles to school past a sex offenders homes to go to school.  I also find sickening that  it is ok for a sex offender to live within 500 yards (i am not certain of the distance) within a school.  I don't understand why the school board and city officials have not taken this issue into consideration.   I  tried to get the school district to transport but they didn't care.  My daughter lived 1.7 miles from school while a sex offender lives practically across the street.  If my daughter must walk 2 miles to school then sex offenders should be required to live outside that boundary!  I pay school taxes and my children and other families children have rights to feel safe and it is the schools responsibility if they are going to make these ridiculous transportation rules in this prison town than they better use tax payer funds to ensure the saftey families that have not only financially invested in this community but plan on raising our families here for generations to come.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, it seems like that America in general has a policy that "criminals" have more rights than you or I.   I think our children should be protected in some way.  The government is always making laws to protect us from ourselves (sear belt laws, building code laws, cell phone laws) - then certainly they ought to make laws that protect us and our children from predatory offenders (and have some form of accountability and effective enforcement)
