"American Idol" or manufactured marketing gimmick?

The hit TV reality show "American Idol" claims to find a pop music idol at the of their series.  Are they really discovering the next music idol or are they just doing a very good job of marketing a gimmick?

Gimmick.  It's a big marketing tool for a few people to get rich.  None of the Idols so far have had any talent.  The more talented contestants always get booted of early because they are not marketable.

I watched for the 1st time this year & totally enjoyed it.  Even tho Taylor Hicks wasn't my 1st choice, I liked him from the very beginning & was glad to see him win.  The show IS a marketing tool, but it does give the contestants a chance to try & see if they have what it takes.  Granted, few do, but I think it's a fun show & for the most part the contestants really seem to enjoy it.  After all...even if they don't win, they get their 15 minutes of fame & you never know what will come of that!
