Description / Comments

Have you ever thought about volunteering during a local or national disaster?  The people we see tending to practical needs at the scenes of hurricanes, earthquakes, house fires, floods and other disasters are not super-heroes.  They are ordinary people who make an extraordinary commitment to be ready to serve where and when their community and their country need them most.  The key is that they signed up as volunteers when nothing was going on: no emergency, no disaster, no urgent need.

The Greater Steuben Chapter will offer classes that will make you disaster ready.

Monday, May 4 – Fulfilling Our Mission (required course for new volunteers – Learn about the mission of the American Red Cross

Monday, May 11 – Mass Care Overview – Learn the different components to Mass Care Activity

Monday, June 1 – Shelter Operations – this course shows the complete operation of setting up, working and closing a shelter during a disaster

Monday, June 8 or Monday, June 15 – Psychological First Aid – this course is strongly recommended for everyone to attend who has not already taken the course.  All DAT and DSHR volunteers are asked to attend this course.  This will be helpful to you while on a DAT call or on assignment for a national disaster.

Please call 1-877-754-3711 to reserve your space.

In addition, the American Red Cross recommends that families create and practice a home fire escape plan.  Fire escape plans should include at least two escape routes for every room in the home.  Families should choose a convenient meeting place outside of the home and practice their escape plan at least twice a year with all family members.
